Two Fatimid marble jar stands (kilgas)

12th century, Egypt

Each of typical form, the octagonal superstructure decorated with carved arches, a goblet, and lion head(s) or spout(s) to the front, containing a sloped trough, on horn-shaped feet. These stands were used as supports for unglazed porous earthenware water jars (habbs).
