A low bronze 'Fu' dish
Song Dynasty (960 - 1279) or later, China
The rectangular dish with sloping sides, the outside with Archaic style relief and handles. The inside with ancient-form Chinese characters. Often fu vessels had a lid in mirror-design to the base, the design of these going back to the Western Zhou period (ca. 9th century B.C.). It is thought originally these vessels were intended to hold food (grain) in worship.
