A Flemish carved limewood figure of the Virgin and Child atop the Globe

17th century, Antwerp

Showing the cloaked Virgin holding the Christ child in her hands, trampling the serpent's head with her right foot, standing on a globe circled by winged putti, with traces of polychromy. The Catholic interpretation of the Virgin Mary triumphing over evil in the world derives from John's vision of the 'apocalyptic woman' in the Book of Revelation. This vision featured a woman with a child above a crescent moon, crushing the devil beneath her foot.
