Rare early 18th-cent. re-edition (printed on LARGE PAPER in 500 copies) of 2 odd vols. of the magnificent town-books of Italy by the Dutch cartographer Joan Blaeu (ca. 1598-1673) originally published in 1663 in Amsterdam, re-published in 1704-1705 in Amsterdam in an enlarged edition by the Dutch bookseller Pieter Mortier (1661-1711) and re-issued by the Dutch publisher Rutger Christoffel Alberts (1691-1732) in 1724 in The Hague. Vol. 1 deals with the region of Lombardy (comprising i.a. beautiful bird’s-eye plans/ views of Bergamo, Brescia, Cremona, Florence, Genoa, Lucca, Mantua, Milan, Padua, Parma, Pavia, Piacenza, Pisa, Trento, Turin, Venice, Verona & Vicenza) and vol. 4 deals with ancient & modern Rome (incl. Vatican City). ¶ Vol. 1 signed & numbered (“N 199”) in black ink (on final free end-paper) by the Dutch publisher Rutger Christoffel Alberts (1691-1732). According to the letterpress list of subscribers in vol. 4 this copy was printed for “Ryck Vermeulen” (early 18th-cent. Dutch dike-reeve of the Tielerwaard polder district). ¶ Vol. 1 lacks the engraved frontisp., 2 preliminary text-leaves (pp. 5-8) & 10 engravings (no. VII, XIII, XXV, XLI, LIX, LXV, LXVIII, LXX, LXXI & LXXII). The list of subscribers (originally publ. in vol. 1) is bound into vol. 4. With small defects (spine-ends sl. dam./ torn, bindings partly rubbed/ worn, both vols. lack first free end-paper, vol. 4 lacks final free end-paper, a few text-leaves & several engravings sl. soiled/ waterstained and/or sl. torn/ creased in outer parts, 1 engraving in vol. 1 (no. XXXIX) lacks small portion of upper & lower blank margin, 1 engraving in vol. 4 (no. LXXXIII) sl. dam. in upper & outer blank margin, occ. sl. foxed/ browned), but nevertheless in a good interior condition.
