An English brass and tubular steel rocking chair

Mid-19th century

With black leather upholstered back, outscrolled seat and padded arms, raised on downswept supports, on curved legs.

This type of rocking chair has been produced for the first time by R.W. Winfield & Co., Birmingham. The model was shown at the Great Exhibition of 1851 at Crystal Palace in London. Its plain form countered the popular taste for overblown decoration.

109 x 64 x 99 cm
