[Nürnberg], 1750-1760. 6 (of 10) Parts in 1 vol.: consisting of [4],30 pp. (with Latin explanatory text), 6 engraved divisional titles (partly heightened with red ink & GOLD) and 60 (of 100) Roman numb. engraved plates (all with Latin caption of which the capital letters are heightened with GOLD) by J.J. Haid after G.D. Ehret, all in a FINE CONTEMPORARY HAND-COLOURING & partly “gommées”. Large folio (ca. 52 x 35,5 cm.), late 18th-cent. half-calf, gilt spine with calf letterpiece.

¶ Nissen (BBI) 1997. Hunt 539. Pritzel 9499. Blunt p. 149. Jackson p. 111. First edition (printed with wide margins) of one of the highlights of 18th-cent. German botanical books by the German physician & botanist Christoph Jacob Trew (1695-1769) illustrated with magnificent large-sized engravings (dep. i.a. various flowering plants) by the German print-maker Johann Jacob Haid (1704-1767) based on designs by the German botanical artist Georg Dionysius Ehret (1708-1770). Our copy comprising part I-VI (each part with separate engr. title of which the printed date of part II-VI is corrected by hand with black ink), but part I without a letterpress title (sometimes present in other copies we could trace) & 3 mezzotint portraits (of C.J. Trew, G.D. Ehret & J.J. Haid). Part VII-X were published between 1765-1773 (together with 40 engr. plates). ¶ A few small defects (spine-ends partly dam., binding rubbed/ worn along extremities, chintz over covers partly worn away, 1 plate (no. XLI) sl. stained in upper right blank corner, occ. sl. soiled/ waterstained in outer blank margins, a few text-leaves with small wormhole in lower blank margin, occ. sl. foxed/ browned), but nevertheless in a good interior condition.
