¶ Juffermans/ Breeschoten 123. Cf. A.J. Jaargang 15, no. 10” (pp. 561-571). Lochem, De Tijdstroom, 1981) listing for this etching the Dutch title “Moeder, haar kind pap voerend” (Mother, feeding her child porridge). UNIQUE COLLECTION of 23 original (col.) etchings/ aquatints by the Dutch artist & print-maker ALBERT ROELOFS (1877-1920) comprising nearly all known states (11 of 12, only the 1st state is not present) of the same print including EXTREMELY RARE PROOFS & VARIANTS PRINTED IN MIRROR-IMAGE providing together a fascinating insight into the creative & technical process of its realization. During the First World War, Albert Roelofs acquired the etching-press of the Dutch artist & print-maker Carel Nicolaas Storm van ’s Gravesande (1841-1924) including a batch of Japanese paper. In this period Roelofs started with the technique of etching and his friend, the Belgian artist Victor Olivier Gilsoul (1867-1939) who had fled his country because of the violence of war and temporarily stayed at Roelofs’ house in Scheveningen, taught him the technique of etching in colours. As subject for a colour etching, Roelofs used a watercolour from 1902, which he had made shortly after the birth of his daughter Albertine Deletaille-Roelofs (1902-2008). In it he captured the domestic moment when his wife Tjieke Roelofs-Bleckmann (1877-1976) is feeding the child. For the production of the colour etching, Roelofs made two separate copper plates: one for the etching and one for the aquatint. Over many printing runs he combined these two copper plates – experimenting in detail with light, shadow and colour – until, as a perfectionist, he had achieved the result he had in mind. (cited from Juffermans/ Breeschoten, “Albert Roelofs 1877-1920”, p. 56). ¶ Provenance: Kunsthandel Borzo (‘s-Hertogenbosch).
