DRAWING in brown ink (finished with grey wash) on handmade paper (with part of a watermark depicting the letters “IHS”). Ca. 15 x 24 cm. (leaf). Tipped onto a paper mount & behind passepartout.

¶ Intriguing late 17th-cent. drawing possibly by (or from the circle of) the Dutch artist JAN LIEVENS (1607-1674) depicting a landscape possibly near Amsterdam. For the watermark, cf. Churchill 358 (dating the paper on 1673). – Small manuscript annotation (probably Latin text) in black ink on verso, foxed/ browned (partly due to off-setting of a former passepartout). ¶ Provenance: Collection of Dr. Jan Frederik Adolf Beins (1913-1970, Dutch physician). With 20th-cent. label of the Dutch art dealer “Gebr[oeders] Douwes/ Rokin 46 Amsterdam” mounted on verso of the passepartout.
