Luigi Nobili, sunshine captured

Luigi Nobili was an Italian artist who arrived in the Dutch East Indies at the end of 1932. Less than six months later he organised an exhibition of his own works at the Italian Consulate in Batavia. The unknown critic of the Batavian newspaper on May 16, 1933 was enthusiastic about Nobili’s work. Particularly the portraits receive his approval, but also the few pieces of Indonesia, create high expectations. Especially those ‘where the sunshine is captured’, as in the present lot.

-Bataviaasch Nieuwsblad, 16 mei 1933.
