A French carabinier cuirass, Model 1855, 1865, Second Empire

Second half 19th century

The iron front and back plate, covered with copper. The plates have all their rivets. Also the brass plate with an eagle with spread wings, surrounded by a laurel and an oak branch. In its claws Jupiter’s symbols, the whole against an iron shield of sunbeams. Iron plate: 19 x 16 cm; brass plate: 9,5 x 9 cm. The backplate carries the number 496 on the inside. The inside bottom lining is engraved: 'Mfe I male de Chat t Mais 1865 1 ere Gaille 1ere Largeur Noo 111.' (Manufacture Impériale de Chatellerault). The leather of the shoulder straps is broken at the tops. The chains, two on both sides, and the ornaments are in place. The leather belt is in place, but repaired.
