A carved ivory group of two fighting beggars and a dog

18th century, French or German

Showing a hurdy-gurdy player sticking his fingers in his opponent's throat, the latter holding a cane above his head while being attacked by a dog. Mounted on an ebonised and acanthus-carved base, together with a glass bell jar. Carved ivory figures such as these were inspired by late 16th- and early 17th-century prints of beggars and hurdy-gurdy players, such as those made by Jacques Bellange and Jacques Callot.

H 17,5 cm (ivory), H 38 cm (incl. base and bell jar)
