A set of five beechwood dining chairs, 1900, Netherlands

Each with a richly carved backrest carved with two shorebirds, the tapering splat with pierced whiplash lines, above a padded seat covered in light blue striped fabric, the seat supported by two diagonal stretchers, the legs joined by an H-shaped stretcher. These chairs were part of the suite of furniture made in Art Nouveau style for De Nieuwe of Littéraire Sociëteit De Witte, a private club in the centre of The Hague.
