Two Rotterdam tin glazed dolphin border tiles

Ca. 1580-1610, Netherlands

A pair of early Dutch majolica faience pottery tiles. These narrow tiles of a mirrored design were inted as border tiles and depict shell and classical style fish, commonly referred to as Dolphins.

8 x 18 cm

Illustrated on page 496, The Dutch Tile 1570-1930, Designs and Names, Jan Pluis, publ. Nederlands Tegelmuseum. Similar tiles held in the collection of Rijksmuseum Amsterdam, BK-1965-92.

One corner damaged and some wear (glaze chipping) along the edges. No restoration.
