A Dutch burr-walnut longcase clock

Otto van Meurs, Amsterdam, second half 18th century

The burr-walnut case with fruitwood marquetry, on ball and claw feet, the hood with openwork decoration, centred by a carved shell with bird, and crowned by two giltwood figures, the polychrome painted brass dial with Roman numerals, indicating the day of the week, date, and lunar phase, signed 'Otto van Meurs Amsteldam', above a view of Amsterdam with moving ships, mermaids, and Mercury, the eight-day mechanism with anchor escapement, striking on two bells, on the half hour and the whole hour in full.
