Bijlaert. Large 8vo (ca. 22,5 x 13 cm.), late 18th-cent. unif. half-calf, gilt spine with red calf letterpiece, uncut. (2x)

¶ Not in Tiele. Scheepers II, 1018 (listing the first Dutch translation publ. in 1769-1770). Cf. Howgego B62, Cordier (Bibl. Sinica) 2093 & 2470, Wilson p. 17 & Cox I, p. 256 (listing the first English edition publ. in 1763). Complete set of the very rare second edition (only 4 copies in NCC) of a Dutch translation of a travel-report by the Scottish physician & traveller John Bell (1691-1780) illustrated with engravings by the Dutch print-maker Paulus Constantijn la Fargue (1729-1782). “This work contains a Journey to Ispahan in 1715-18, in the suite of Artemy Petrovich Valaisky, Russian Ambassador to the Shah Hussein; to Pekin in 1719, with the Ambassador sent by Peter the Great to Kang-Hi, emperor of China; to Derbent in Persia in 1722 with the Russian army, commanded by the Czar in person; and to Constantinople in 1737-38, at the order of the Chancellor of Russia and the English Ambassador at the Court of Russia [..]” (cited from Cox). Both vols. ex bibliotheca C.F.C.G. Boissevain (with his book-plate mounted on upper paste-down). ¶ A few minor imperfections (spines sl. rubbed/ worn, upper inner hinge of vol. I sl. weakening, occ. sl. foxed/ browned), but nevertheless a good set (printed with wide margins).
