Wood-engraving (printed on thin Japanese paper, ca. 1940). Signed “M.C. Escher” in pencil (in lower left blank margin). Ca. 6 x 6 cm. (image) & ca. 13 x 11 cm. (leaf). Tipped onto a paper mount.

¶ Bool (Leven en werk van M.C. Escher) 322. ORIGINAL WOOD-ENGRAVING by M.C. ESCHER (printed on thin JAPANESE PAPER) designed as book-plate for the Dutch poet & literary critic G.H. ’s-Gravesande (=ps. of Goverdus Henricus Pannekoek, 1882-1965) with as motto the opening lines of the medieval Dutch poem “Beatrijs” (“Van Dichten Comt Mi Cleine Bate/ Die Liede Raden Mi Dat Ict Late”). With small collector’s mark (“Collectie A.I.J.M. Schellart” on verso of the paper mount) of the Dutch collector Alphonsus Ignatius Josephus Maria Schellart (1907-1987) with a few annotations in pencil (on recto of the paper mount) implicating that he received this wood-engraving directly from M.C. Escher (“bezitter na Es[cher]”) on 14 January 1941 (“14-1-41”). ¶ Apart from some foxing (mainly in outer blank margins) in good condition.
