In ’s Graven-Hage, By Nicolaes van Coevenhoven [..], [1669]. 2 Parts in 1 vol.: [11],[1 blank]; [20] unnumb. text-leaves. With 2 engraved frontispieces & 82 engraved plates (numbered “1-36”, “1-20”, “1-18” & “1-8” in the plate) dep. i.a. musketeers in action. 4to (ca. 24 x 18,5 cm.), 17th-cent. gilt panelled calf with gilt ornament (oval supra-libros) central on both covers, gilt ribbed spine with red morocco letterpiece.

¶ Kossmann (De Boekhandel te ’s-Gravenhage) pp. 72-73. Cf. Sloos (Warfare and the Age of Printing) 05014 (listing the second enlarged edition publ. in 1670). Very rare first edition (only 2 copies in NCC) of a 17th-cent. manual (printed on LARGE PAPER) by the Dutch captain-lieutenant Johan Boxel comprising instructions for the use of muskets & pikes (in part I) and military combat formations (in part II). ¶ With defects (top of spine dam., binding partly rubbed/ worn, small ticket mounted at top of backstrip, both inner hinges & book-block loosening, first free end-paper loose, both free end-papers with late 17th-cent. calligraphic scribbling in black ink, partly foxed/ browned throughout), but nevertheless in an acceptable condition.
