STEPHANUS [=DELAUNE, Étienne (ca. 1518-ca. 1583)]. (Combat of Naked Men).

Engraving (published ca. 1560). Signed “Stephanus [capital letter “S” in reverse] Fecit” & “Cum pri[vilegio] Regis” in the plate (in lower margin). Ca. 6,5 x 22 cm. Tipped onto a paper mount, behind passepartout & framed (behind glass).

Rare 16th-cent. oblong engraving (part of a series of 12 prints depicting combats & triumphs) by the French goldsmith & print-maker Étienne Delaune (ca. 1518-ca. 1583, who often signed his prints with “Stephanus”) depicting a combat scene between naked men & native American “savages” adorned with feathers. – Outer blank margins cropped to the borderline, but else in good condition (not examined out of frame).
