Literature: M. Winzen, 'Thomas Ruff Fotografien 1979-heute', Cologne 2001, p. 183, no. POR-F56, illustrated.

Thomas Ruff studied photography from 1977 to 1985 at the Staatliche Kunstakademie in Düsseldorf with the famous photographer married couple Bernd and Hilla Becher. Andreas Gursky, Thomas Struth and Candida Höfer were fellow students. In his student days Ruff worked as art director for a post-punkband, where the members of the band posed for Ruff’s first photographic experiments. During this period, he also worked on the well-known portraits. He researched the history of the art of portraits by experimenting with composition and framework. Ruff usually photographed his friends, all between 20 and 35 years old. He asked them not to show any facial expression, to dress informally and to stand in front of the camera in front of a neutral background as with passport photos. The result was revolutionary. In 1986 Ruff decided to print these photographs in a large format. These huge images force the viewer to see the physical reality van the persons portrayed, the pores, wrinkles and imperfections in the faces which are clearly visible. Yet, one is not face to face with a person as is with the traditional portraiture which is often what we believe, but specifically with a photo, and a chemically treated piece of paper with an image on it. Ruff emphasized that this range of unbiased, merely competent function of photography; all interpretations about the possible nature of inner life of a person is, from this perspective, ‘solely’ a projection of the viewer.
