signed 'C Bisschop' (lower right)

oil on panel, 35x28,5 cm

with inscription 'Mrs. Locock/Painted by Kate Bisschop/1873/The Hague' (on the reverse)

The present painting is a portrait of Mrs. Abigail 'Abbi' Locock-King at a Hindeloopen desk. Abbi Locock-King had an international background. Her father, Jonas King, was an American professor in oriental languages at Amherst College, who met Abbi's mother Annetta Aspasia Mengous in Greece while being on a protestant mission. Abbie married with British diplomat Mr. Sydney Locock (1834-1885) in 1859 and they moved together to The Hague in 1868. On the 21st of March 1869 the paper 'Het Vaderland' notes that Abbie was requested for a visit by Queen Sophie of the Netherlands.
