[MEDIEVAL ILLUMINATED MINIATURE] – [SAINT MARCEL OF PARIS] – LARGE HISTORIATED CAPITAL LETTER “S” enclosing a scene with Saint Marcel of Paris

(depicted as bishop with mitre, staff & burnished gold halo) standing in a church interior with a tamed dragon beside him & in the background a blue curtain decorated with fleurs-de-lis (incorporating the Latin words “O: Sancte Marcelle [..]”) in gold. VELLUM LEAF illuminated with burnished gold and blue, green, pink, red & white paint. Ca. 160 x 186 mm. (leaf). Behind passepartout & framed (behind glass).

¶ Provenance: The property of the descendants of Anton Philips (1874-1951). Beautiful large-sized miniature depicting Saint Marcel (ca. 360-436, ninth Bishop of Paris) probably excised from a medieval Antiphonary (probably made in France in the fifteenth century). – Slightly creased in outer parts (occasionally with loss of burnished gold), but nevertheless in good condition (not examined out of frame).
