Folio (ca. 44 x 28 cm.), 18th-cent. gilt panelled calf with large gilt ornament central on both covers, gilt ribbed spine with calf letterpiece.

¶ Schuytvlot 804. Scheepers I, 396. Sumptuously illustrated re-edition of a Dutch translation (in verses) of Ovid’s Metamorphoses by Joost van den Vondel (1587-1679) accompanied by explanatory notes by the French dramatist Pierre Du Ryer (1606-1658). At the end of Ovid’s text (on pp. 529-538) P.C. Hooft’s play “Paris Oordeel. Tafelspel” is added. With loosely inserted letterpress PROSPECTUS (fold. leaf, 4 text-pp., engr. title-vignette, ca. 33 x 25 cm.) for “De Gedaantwisselingen van P. Ovidius Naso, In het Latyn en Nederduitsch, door den Heer Isaak Verburg, [..]” (Te Amsterdam, by M. Magérus [..], 1772). ¶ Ex bibliotheca J.A.J. Barge (1884-1952, Dutch physician & politician) with his book-plate (designed by Huib Luns) mounted on upper paste-down. – Foot of spine sl. dam. (partly repaired), binding partly rubbed/ worn (along extremities). Partly foxed/ browned, but nevertheless an attractive binding in an acceptable condition.
