Pool, 2 fold. engraved maps (i.a. “Kaert van de Golf van Lion tussen de Caep Sicie in Provence en de Caep Quiers in Roussillon [..]”, ca. 34 x 45 cm.), 3 fold. engraved plates (dep. profile views of coast-lines), 7 engraved plates/ tables (of which 5 fold.) & 40 Roman numb. engraved plates (dep. i.a. corals & ocean plants) by M. Pool. Folio (ca. 41,5 x 25,5 cm.), 20th-cent. gilt-lettered rexine with ribbed spine, uncut.

Rare first & only Dutch translation (printed on LARGE PAPER) of the first scholarly work on oceanography (incl. marine biology) by the Italian natural scientist Count Luigi Ferdinando Marsigli (or Marsili, 1658-1730) with introduction by the Dutch physician Herman Boerhaave (1668-1738) & illustrated with engravings by the Dutch print-maker Matthijs Pool (1676-1740) depicting i.a. corals & ocean plants. – A few preliminary leaves bound in a wrong order (but text is complete). Occ. sl. foxed/ browned, but else in good condition.
