First & only Dutch edition by the Dutch minister Arnoldus Montanus (1625-1683) concerning the first Dutch (diplomatic) missions to the Emperor of Japan (in 1649 and 1661) with a description of i.a. the (natural) history, religion & topography of Japan illustrated with beautiful engravings including large-sized panoramic bird’s-eye views of EDO (“Iedo”, ca. 28,5 x 77,5 cm.), KAGOSHIMA (“Cangoxuma”, ca. 27,5 x 56 cm.), KYOTO (“Miako”, ca. 28 x 78 cm.) & OSAKA (“De Stadt Osacco”, ca. 26,5 x 69,5 cm.). “[..] Montanus was the first to synthesize a Dutch view of Japan, using materials on the country collected by the employees of the Dutch East India Company [..]” (R.H. Hesselink, “Memorable Embassies: the secret history of Arnoldus Montanus’ Gedenkwaerdige Gesantschappen”, 2002). ¶ Lacks 1 engraving (“Moord van den Kaisar Cubo”). With defects (foot of spine sl. dam./ chipped, waterstained throughout, map torn & small hole in the image, text-pp. 15-26 with small perforation in inner blank margin, 1 index-leaf almost loose), but text is complete. Sold with all faults (not subject to return).
