Milano, Fratelli Treves [..], 1890, [XVI],724 pp. With 4 maps (incl. 1 fold. col. lithograph “Carta speciale di Tano Niha (Isola Nías) [..]”, ca. 48 x 48 cm.), 26 plates (of which 6 col. lithographs dep. various birds), 2 fold. letterpress genealogical tables & num. (wood-engr.) text-ills. Large 8vo (ca. 24,5 x 16,5 cm.), late 19th-/ early 20th-cent. gilt-lettered half-chagrin (orig. col. lithogr. wrappers preserved), red edges.
– Added: a collection of 20th-cent. photographs of the drawings, D.G.E. Wolterbeek Muller’s visiting card & 7 photostats of his manuscript diary (mentioning his visit to Nias in 1880).

Rare first & only edition by the Italian anthropologist Elio Modigliani (1860-1932) on the Indonesian island Nias enriched with 9 tipped-in ORIGINAL DRAWINGS (in various techniques, various sizes & partly folded) by the Dutch captain DIEDERIJK GERHARD ENGELBERT WOLTERBEEK MULLER (1836-1916) depicting various Indonesian figures & objects related to the island Nias (a few drawings monogrammed “DWM” & dated “1880”/ “1882”/ “1883”). ¶ With defects (spine dam./ partly repaired with tape, first free end-paper missing, 1 text-leaf loose (pp. 247-248), sl. marg. waterstained at the beginning, a few scattered annotations in pencil).
