Provenance: -Governor S.J.L. van Waardenburg, Governor-General of Dutch-New-Guinea from 27 December 1947 to 01 April 1953, thence by descent to the present owner.

S.J.L. van Waardenburg was born in Buitenzorg (now renamed Bogor) on February 21th, 1900, and made his career as a government official. He was interned in various Japanese prison camps, from 1941 to 1945. After World War II, he returned to the civil service as a member of the Board of the Dutch East Indies. His most important post was when he was appointed Governor General of Dutch-New-Guinea.

Van Waardenburg was an art lover and had direct contact with various artists in the Dutch-East Indies, among them Willem Dooyewaard.
