On the reverse a handwritten dedication: 'Voor Zijne Excell. Jhr. Mr. A.C.D. de Graeff met gevoelens van eerbied en groote hoogachting, van H. Paulides, october 1931'.

Jonkheer Andries Cornelis Dirk de Graeff (1872-1957) was a Governor-General of the Dutch East Indies (1926-1931) and Minister of Foreign Affairs in the Cabinet Colijn II and III. A portrait of him, painted by Paulides in 1930, is in the collection of the Tropenmuseum in Amsterdam. Jhr. De Graeff is portrayed with a column and a wayang attribute in the background.
