[WORLD-MAP] – “NOVA TOTIUS TERRARUM ORBIS TABULA, [..]”.

Handcol. engraved world-map in double hemispheres surrounded by 2 smaller hemispheres (dep. the polar regions) & 4 large allegorical scenes in the corners representing the four elements (probably etched by Romeyn de Hooghe). Publ. by F. de Wit (Amsterdam, after 1668). Ca. 48,5 x 56 cm. Behind passepartout & luxuriously framed (behind glass).

¶ Cf. Shirley 444 & Koeman III, p. 212. Attractive late 17th-cent. world-map published by the Dutch print-maker Frederik de Wit (1630-1706) depicting i.a. California as an island (“California Insvla”) and parts of Australia (“Hollandia Nova” & “t Land van Pieter Nuyts”) & Tasmania (“Ant. van Diemens landt”) as discovered by Abel Tasman (1603-1659) in 1642 & 1644. – Vertical fold in the middle (as publ.). A few brown stains in outer (blank) margins, sl. foxed/ browned, but else in good condition (not examined out of frame).
