In 1880 Cornelis Vreedenburgh was born in the Dutch countryside in Woerden. His father, who ran a painting company, taught him the basics of painting. Later on Vreedenburgh would receive lessons from Gerardus Johannes Roermeester (1844-1936), but foremost the teachings and counsel of Willem Bastiaan Tholen (1860-1931) were of importance to the painter. They both shared an admiration for The Hague School painters and strived to paint their own impression of the Dutch landscape. Tholen en Vreedenburgh often went painting together by boat and they cruised through many landscapes.

At the age of 32 Vreedenburgh married Marie Schotel (1883-1957) and after some time in Hattem, they finally settled in Laren in 1918. Their house in ‘Het Gooi’, served as a perfect spot for Cornelis Vreedenburgh to combine his love for nature, especially the water polder landscapes, with his appreciation of the city Amsterdam. In this city he depicted many picturesque canals and squares and maintained contact with his colleague painters. His work was well appreciated by important collectors and the Royal family; Queen Wilhelmina for example acquired two of his paintings during Vreedenburgh’s solo-exhibition in 1937.

The present lot is a beautiful example of Vreedenburgh’s talent of depicting the idyllic Dutch countryside. The Loosdrechtse plassen were only a few kilometers away from his home in Laren and Vreedenburgh would often paint this peaceful spot. His bright palette and balanced composition perfectly exemplify the relaxed atmosphere of the Loosdrechtse Plassen, the perfect spot to escape the stress of the city and spend the day on the calm water.
