Salomon Leonardus Verveer (1813-1876)

A canal scene with the Oude Kerk of Delft

signed and dated 'S.L. Verveer f 54'

oil on panel, 28,5x38,5 cm

-The present lot has been in the collection of the family of the present owner since the 1950s.

Please compare this work to an oil painting with the same composition, 'Havengezicht', from collection Kunsthandel Bies (1987).

From the mid 1830’s onwards to the 1860’s, Salomon Leonardus Verveer (The Hague 1813-1876) used motifs from the city of Delft in his compositions. Verveer’s capriccio paintings are based on his own romantic artists view, with motives taken from reality. In his work we more often see the Oude Kerk and the still existing city gate the Oostpoort of Delft. We are grateful to Mr Christiaan Lucht for his assitance to help in cataloguing this lot.
