Provenance: -Mrs. C.W.M. van Vliet-Lichtveld (4 May 1928 - 2 April 2018), daughter of Lou Lichtveld (better known as the author Albert Helman) and Leni Mengelberg.

In the year 1924, Hendrik Valk was rejected by the love of his life. He was desperate. He had to talk about it with someone and decided to visit his friend and fellow artist Piet Mondrian, who was staying in the city of Veere at that time. Mondrian encouraged him. Valk then wandered through Veere and heard the church bells toll. The reverb of the clock – which was cracked – sounded broken. Valk realised that, although he himself was also broken, he could find the courage to recover. (source: A. de Vries, J. Brand, ‘Hendrik Valk 1897-1986’, Warnsveld, 2005, p. 43).
