What better year to rediscover an early work by Jongkind than 2019? This year, we celebrate the 200th birthday of the famous Dutch painter, who was born in Lattrop in 1819.

In 1837, Jongkind started his education at The Hague Academy of Arts, where he met Johan Hendrik Weissenbruch, Charles Rochussen, and Wijnand Nuijen, amongst others. At the academy he took drawing lessons, and in order to learn how to properly use oil paint, he received lessons from the famous Romantic painter Andreas Schelfhout. The influence of his teacher is clearly visible in the present lot. Seven years later, he exhibited his first painting at the painters’ society Arti et Amicitiae in Amsterdam.

In 1845, he registered for the Exhibition of Paintings and Artworks of Living Artists in The Hague, the place to be for contemporary painters, where they could show and hopefully sell their work to the public. In the catalogue, there are two entries under the name of J.B. Jongkind in ’s-Hage: number 169, ‘A Harbour View’, and number 170, ‘A Dutch Landscape in Summer’. It could very well be that the latter painting is the present lot. J.H. Weissenbruch also exhibited two works at this exposition, and as the provenance indicates, Jongkind’s artwork may have been bought by a member of the Weissenbruch family at this exhibition.

In November 1845, after the unveiling of the sculpture of William the Silent in front of the Noordeinde Palace, the French painter Eugène Isabey visited Jongkind’s workshop and deemed the artist worthy of coming to Paris to study under him. With a royal grant to pay his debts, he left for Paris in March 1846 – for the city which would bring him great fame.
