“A Paris. De L’Imprimerie de Richard Breton [..], 1559, 42 (of 44) numb. leaves. With woodcut printer’s mark on title. Small 8vo, 20th-cent. half-morocco, ribbed spine with red mor. letterpiece, top edge gilt.

¶ Carter/ Vervliet 25. Brunet III, 1935. Extremely rare first edition of a 16th-cent. French manifesto for vernacular literature by the French lawyer Abel Mathieu (ca. 1520-ca. 1572, also known as “Abel Mathieu, sieur des Moystardières”) entirely printed by the French publisher Richard Breton (1524-1571) in a beautiful CIVILITÉ-TYPE designed by the French printer Robert Granjon (1513-1589). ¶ Ex bibliotheca Anandamoy Mukherjee, Abby Aldrich Rockefeller (1874-1948) & John D. Rockefeller Jr. (1874-1960) and Joan McIlrath (with their book-plates mounted on first & second free end-paper). – Lacks final text-leaf & final leaf with woodcut printer’s mark. Occ. (sl.) marg. waterstained, a few brown stains in final text-leaves, occ. sl. foxed/ browned, but nevertheless in an acceptable condition.
