¶ Dufour 132. Senelier 553. Quérard VIII, p. 193. Le Petit p. 565. Printing and the Mind of Man 207. Very rare first issue (“type A”) of the first 8vo-edition (printed on LARGE PAPER, ca. 19,7 x 12,5 cm.) of Jean-Jacques Rousseau’s famous political treatise “On the Social Contract; or, Principles of Political Rights” published in Amsterdam by the French publisher Marc-Michel Rey (1720-1780). Our issue with the controversial passage on marriage (“Le mariage, par exemple, étant un contract civil, [..]” printed as footnote on pp. 321-322) which was omitted by Rousseau in later issues (cf. R.A. Leigh, “Unsolved problems in the bibliography of Rousseau”, 1990). “The Contrat Social remains Rousseau’s greatest work [..]. Nevertheless, his fundamental thesis that government depends absolutely on the mandate of the people, and his genuine creative insight into a number of political and economic problems, give his work an indisputable cogency. It had the most profound influence on the political thinking of the generation following its publication. It was, after all, the first great emotional plea for the equality of all men in the state [..]” (cited from “Printing and the Mind of Man”). ¶ Owner’s entry of “J Geary” in black ink on second free end-paper. – Top of spine sl. chipped, letterpiece sl. dam., but else in very good condition.
