[EMBLEMATA] – [ALCIATI, A.]. Los Emblemas de Alciato. Traducidos en rhimas Espanolas [por Bernardino Daza Pinciano] [..].

“En Lyon Por Gvilielmo Rovillio[=G. Rouillé]”, 1549, 256,[6 index] pp. With 201 (of 210?) emblematic woodcuts (incorporating 1 small map of Italy & 14 ills. dep. trees) surrounded by woodcut architectural & ornamental borders. 8vo, late 19th-/ early 20th-cent. vellum, gilt spine with mor. letterpiece, all edges gilt.

¶ Landwehr (Romanic emblem books) 40. Campa (Emblemata Hispanica) A1. Praz p. 250n. Fairfax Murray (French) 9. Not in Adams. Very rare first Spanish translation of one of the most influential emblem-books by the Italian humanist Andrea Alciati (1492-1550). Of this first Spanish edition two versions exist: one printed for “Mathias Bonhome[=Macé Bonhomme]” and one for Guillaume Rouillé (ca. 1518-1589). According to the reference works the number of emblems in both editions should be either 212 (Campa) or 210 (Landwehr). Our copy differs from both editions (although the collation is the same) and seems to be a variant-edition: Landwehr 40 calls for 210 emblems (“Description of 210 emblems; the first book follows the Wechel editions of 1540-1542 and the second book the Venice 1546 edition”) but the number of emblems in our copy correspond exactly with Landwehr 43 listing a French translation (publ. in 1549 in Lyon by the same publisher G. Rouillé) containing 201 emblems (of which 14 are trees). The attractive woodcuts (a few are monogrammed “PV” in the block) are generally attributed to Bernard Salomon or “Le Petit Bernard” (ca. 1508-ca. 1561, see Brunet I, p. 148), others mention Pierre Eskrich (ca. 1520-1590) as the artist. According to Campa the woodcuts may be attributed to either Pierre Vingle or Pierre Vase. Ex bibliotheca “B[ob] L[uza]” with his circular book-plate. ¶ Lacks the final blank leaf R4. Sl. waterstained (throughout) in outer (blank) margins. A few small portions of upper blank margin of title-page torn off. Outer margin of a few leaves trimmed (touching a few letters). Occ. small annotations & underlinings in ink (throughout) in outer blank margin. Leaf G3 lacks small portion of lower blank margin. Occ. sl. foxed/ browned. Both joints sl. splitting, but nevertheless in good condition.
