A Chinese Simhanada Avalokiteshvara (Guanyin)

17th century.

Seated in the bhadrasana pose on a qilin or roaring lion (Simha), surrounded with floral motives and stems of lotuses, cloaked in long flowing robes and embellished in jewellery while holding the right hand in the varadamudra. With a gentle smile, the serene face of the Bodhisattva has downcast eyes, while his head with long pendulous ears is crowned with headdress surmounted by Amitabha Buddha.
