Hans Balner (1926)

Second half 20th century, Dutch.

A bronze sculpture of a trotting Horse. Signed at the base: H. Balner.

46x74 cm.

Hans Balner (1925-2018) Lotnumbers 1317 to 1322 Hans Balner was a Professor at the University of Leiden, specializing in immune- genetics of mammals; primarily apes. In 1982 at the TNO he led a team of specialists who undertook a biomedical research on apes. This research institute came under the scrutiny of animal protection rights because of the experiments that were carried out and for which Balner was accused of animal cruelty. Nothing is less true. In his lifetime after his retirement, he devoted himself to his hobbies: music and sculpturing. His love for animals is portrayed clearly in his sculptures, particularly dogs, but also other animals which he had cast in bronze at the bronze foundry, Volkers from Geldermalsen. The figures prove how talented Balner was. Researcher, musician and sculptor. His preference for figurative work blossomed through his mentor Kees Verkade.
