Lot 241
Autumn Auction: European Fine Art - 21 november 2018
Attributed to Edward Lear (1812-1888)

'Nice from the road to Genoa';
'View from St. Hospice near Nice'

watercolour on paper (2), 19x54 cm and 19x50,5 cm

Edward Lear stayed in Nice during the winter of 1864-65 and revisited the city more often. He described it as 'town chockfull of houses'. He walked far making copious sketches; of some locations he produced serveral versions. He and his servant, Giorgio Kokali, also walked to Genoa and back.

Lear made several views on Nice from a distance. Please compare the second work to a watercolour/pencil drawing with the same composition: 'View from Saint Hospice' (a small bay near Nice), sold at Sotheby's, London, 14 November 1991, lot 175.
