Lee Man Fong paintings are often inspired by the symbolic meaning of animals in traditional Chinese culture as is the case with this horse painting. The horse is one of the 12 animals in the Chinese zodiac. The year 2014 was the latest year of the horse (the cycle recurs every 12 years). People who are born in a horse year are said to have a very sociable personality. A horse also symbolises honesty and frankness. The horse is an animal that has been around throughout the history of China, having been first domesticated more than 5,000 years ago. Horses and chariots were a vital part of China’s military force, therefore horses represent power and nobility. Some of the famous classic Chinese paintings are of horses, particularly in the black and white brushed ink style. These paintings most probably have influenced Lee Man Fong.
