A Pende style panel

D.R. Congo.

This is a fabulous old Pende door panel from the Kasa Pende from the Eastern Congo. The Pende are known for their statues and these are mostly found in their door panels. These panels are displayed outside of the huts of Chiefs to provide protection as well as proclaim the authority of the owners. These panels vary in size and can be very colorful, with the copious use of triangular incising, usually black and white. They use reddish and blue colors which is produced by the application of 'tukula' powder, which comes from the camwood tree, and is obtained in trade from the Mbala.
