A Sepik mask

Papua New Guinea.

Carved from wood and adorned with shells. Not all Sepik River Masks were made to be worn by people. Some masks were made to “decorate” sacred flutes, the front of canoes, the men’s house, as lucky amulets and even yams.

The men's house is the place where important decisions regarding the village are made, where boys are initiated and become men and ceremonies to please the spirits are performed. Other masks were not made to wear directly on the head but were part of a larger assemblage.
