A Sepik ceremonial shield

Papua New Guinea.

Decorated in the shape of the head of a crocodile with snakes and birds, embellished with cowry shells, feathers and fibres. Latmul masks are from the Middle Sepik and are still being made today. Old ones are rare and collectable. They are often covered on the lower half with very small tightly packed nasal shells.
