An Asmat statue

Papua, Indonesia.

This very fine male Asmat ancestor figure has the representation of a Praying Mantis, symbol of headhunting. Standing with legs slightly apart, free carved arms and decorated with painted ornamentation on the body. The intensity of the red ochre contrasts effectively with the chalky colors applied to the lighter wood. Decorated with incised ornamentation on the body.

Provenance: orally communicated to have been part of the collection of Brother Schlagintweit, Collection Von Gailsche Museum für Völkerkunde Giessen, before 1911, Jan Visser, Amsterdam.

H 97 cm.
