¶ With an intriguing text engraved on a metal plate attached to the frame: “Gegeben von L. von Be[e]thoven an/ Gräfin Gallenberg/ Gegeben von Graf Gallenberg an/ baron Emil von Erlanger”. The German artist Joseph Karl Stieler (1781-1858) painted in 1820 this famous portrait of Ludwig van Beethoven. Stieler’s nephew Friedrich Dürck (1809-1884), who became his assistent in 1822, drew this portrait on lithographic limestone and it was afterwards printed by Josef Anton Selb (1784-1832) in Munich. ¶ Ex bibliotheca János Plesch (1878-1957). With a small circular library-ticket “Prof and Mrs P.H. Plesch Collections” mounted on verso. – Sl. foxed/ browned (not examined out of frame).
