Papua, Cenderawasih Bay, Biak, ancestor figure, korwar
in squatting position, the arms resting on the knees, hands raised below a projecting face with long aquiline arrow-shaped nose, the cheeks with notched pattern, drilled ears and septum, at the back an amulet with anthropomorphic head, brownish to black patina.
The present korwar, a ritual effigy of a deceased person, is unquestionably a fine example of a style which we now can attribute to the southcoast of the island Biak. Whereas the prominent head is angular and rather massive, the body parts, limbs and torso, are rendered in a curving, slender manner, in execution accentuating the confines of a cylinder.
Extraordinary is the presence of a diminutive figure at the back. In general, if a diminutive figure appears, it stands in front between the legs and touched by the hands of the main figure. In this case the figure at the back is rendered as an amulet. According to an early missionary report (Ottow & Geissler 1857) amulets were worn in the Doreh Bay on the back and tied around the neck by a string. Corbey (2019) illustrates this with a watercolour by Jules-Louis Lejeune, draughtsman on the Duperrey expedition between 1822-24. Apparently this custom was also found in the Biak area.
As far as we know from all published examples, this is the first korwar figure with an amulet on the back.

Moluccas, Leti, ancestor figure
in squatting position on a rectangular base, arms crossed resting on the knees, the face with inlaid eyes and mouth (missing), a triangular jutting nose with accentuated nostrils, wearing ornaments on head and ears (broken), flat back with accentuated spine and shoulder blades, H. 37 cm.
Ancestor figures from Leti of this size were generally placed on a pillar or a plank-like structure. Underneath the base of this statue there is a clear marking of a rectangular extension cut or sawn off.
A remarkable detail are the holes drilled on purpose in the armpits and back of the knees; small holes are also visible below the feet.
On three sides of the base we see a vegetative ornamentation carved in low-relief symbolising wealth and fecundity and which together with the ornaments are meaningful attributes of an important ancestor, i.e. a village founder.
