A collection of flatware, Djokja, in canteens
The history behind this lotnumber from a private collection.
Soon after the First World War, the grandparents of the owner moved to the Dutch East
Indies. The mother who was born in Utrecht in 1919 went there as a small child and the father was born in the Dutch East Indies in 1918. During the Second World War the mother, her mother and two sisters were sent to a Japanese prisoner of war camp. They could take nothing with them except for small objects which they smuggled in. Thus they lost everything.
After the war the parents met each other on Morotai, married there and their first two children were born there.
The remainder of the family returned to the Netherlands during 1946-1948 except for the parents who stayed because of the position of the father with the VVCM, “de Verenigde Vorstenlanden Cultuur Maatschappij” and because of his sugar plantations and factories on Java.
The headquarters of the VVCM was in Semarang, thus they moved there in 1952. In 1957 the Dutch companies were nationalised by Indonesia with many demonstrations following. They returned to The Netherlands in 1958.
One could take very little or even no money out of Indonesia, so in the year of their returning to The Netherlands, beautiful Indonesian objects were purchased. This included the Djokja cutlery, possibly bought in an antique shop of a silver shop specializing in Djokja. This cutlery was made in the 1930’s.
In 1960 the family of seven emigrated from The Netherlands to Indiana in the United States. The cutlery was only used for special occasions and when visitors came. The mother divided the cutlery between two sisters when they had their own homes to run. One of the sisters moved to Costa Rica in 2007 and gave her half to her sister as she felt that the cutlery should not be separated. When this sister suddenly died in 2014 the cutlery was returned to Costa Rica in 2015. In June 2017 this Djokja cutlery, in two canteens, contained in a suitcase, was brought to the Netherlands and left with a cousin and his wife to be sold.
